About the author

Robert Bartholomew holds a PhD in medical sociology from James Cook University.  He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer with the department of Psychological Medicine at The University of Auckland. He is currently teaching History at Botany College in Auckland, New Zealand.

 

I am looking for people who have any stories of this period and would like to share. This may include the recollection of stories from parents or grandparents who are willing to be interviewed, share photos, and archival documents for a second book. This includes stories from anywhere in Aotearoa.  Feel free to contact me at:

Speaking on the History of Māori racial segregation including a discussion on the infamous Papakura bar incident of 1959 involving Henry Rongomau Bennett – New Zealand’s 1st Māori Psychiatrist, who was refused a drink at the Papakura Hotel on the basis of his ethnicity.

Speaking on the History of Māori racial segregation including a discussion of incidents involving the Indian community such as the 1933 case in Pukekohe where Motiram Wallabh was refused access to a section of the cinema based on his ‘race.’
